You can immerse yourself in an emerald-green landscape during numerous hikes, dive deep into cobalt blue seas, watch the majestic whales and friendly dolphins, try the local wine, and learn about the interesting geology and history of the island.

Things to Do in Pico Island Azores

1. Go Whale and Dolphin-Watching

I have to confess, I am obsessed with whales and dolphins and the main reason why I traveled to Pico is to see them.

I went in April and I didn’t find the best conditions, and many tours were canceled due to hostile weather.

However, since I was there for 10 days I managed to go on a couple of tours and see some amazing resident sperm whales and if you love nature you should do it too.

The best part is that you will be watching whales and dolphins in their natural habitat.

It’s no mere activity; it’s a spectacle of nature, where the most graceful and majestic creatures of the deep blue roam freely.

The Azores, Pico Island included, is known as a hotbed for various whale and dolphin species, making it a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts.

You can join a marine tour, which promises an unforgettable close encounter with these magnificent creatures.

With experienced guides providing insights into the lives of these cetaceans, it’s an experience as educational as it is thrilling.

Next on the itinerary, prepare for an invigorating climb up Pico Mountain – the crowning glory of Portugal.

This climb isn’t just an outdoor adventure; it’s a very challenging hike for many reasons. It’s steep, the terrain is uneven, and the weather is hostile most of the time, with lots of wind and gusts, on top of that (metaphorically and not) you will need to do a sort of climb in the last bit that gets you to the peak.

Most people visit Pico just to do that climb. I signed up but in the end, I chickened out and cancelled.

Before you begin though, visit Casa da Montanha, the starting point for all mountain visitors, from where you can take a closer look at what’s waiting ahead.

Day climbs offer splendid views, while night ascents promise the reward of a glorious sunrise. If you’re really daring, try the overnight climb; sunset, a night under the stars, and a sunrise greeting.

Please make sure you go with a certified guide for your safety. If it gets foggy you won’t be able to see the trail and it will be very easy to get lost. Here below I am sharing one of the tours that gets great reviews.

Here, the traditional intermingles with the extraordinary. Witness the vine cultivation in small patches of black soil, encircled by walls of volcanic stone, all preserved through ancient methods.

Meanwhile, you can enjoy the spectacular views of Mount Pico in one direction, and the Faial Island in another.

You can explore these vineyards on foot via the splendid hiking trail that passes through them, the landscape will leave you enchanted.

5. Visit Moinho do Frade

While we’re on the topic of Criação vineyards, make sure to check out the iconic red and white windmill there, called Moinho do Frade, for some local shopping and grape sampling.

This traditional windmill is preserved exceptionally well, and you can even climb on it for some breathtaking views of the landscape.

The windmill is quite famous on the island, so getting your picture taken with it is a must when you visit.

There’s also a small shop here where you can buy some local products as well as grapes from the vineyard.

6. Explore the Lava Cave of Gruta de Torres (The Largest Lava Tunnel in Portugal)

Whether you are interested in the geological history of the island or not, you should include a visit to the Gruta de Torres in your Pico Itinerary. (If you take the above-mentioned full-day tour, it’s included).

The Gruta de Torres is Portugal’s largest lava tunnel It’s a descent into a mysterious world that spans over 5150m and dates back roughly 1500 years.

The tour includes a 20-minute explanatory video and a one-hour guided adventure, covering 450m of the tunnel in total darkness. Your way is illuminated solely by the lantern provided at the entrance.

As you go through the tunnel, you will appreciate the clear traces of lava that once flowed here, a geological story etched in stone.

At €8 (less than 9 bucks) for an adult ticket, the Gruta de Torres offers a glimpse into Pico’s volcanic history that is both accessible and awe-inspiring.

7. Visit the Farol da Ponta da Ilha (The Largest Lighthouse in Pico)

Perched on Pico’s easternmost tip in Manhenha, the Farol da Ponta da Ilha is one of the top Pico Island attractions. Open every Wednesday, visitors can freely explore this towering beacon.

In summer, the doors open from 2 PM to 5 PM, and for the rest of the year, it welcomes guests from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM.

A visit is a must not just for the lighthouse itself, but for the stunning views it offers of the surrounding landscapes.

8. Soak at the Natural Swimming Pools

There’s no better way to cool off during your Pico adventure than taking a dip in the island’s delightful natural pools.

No matter how cold it is, locals are always up for an energizing swim, and we should try it too.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I regret not to have tried it but I’ll make sure I’ll do it next time I go.

There are many natural pools around the island which make up for the lack of beaches.

Crowded in the summer, you will have them all for yourself the rest of the year. They have also impeccably cleaned toilets.

Formed from seawater captured within rock enclosures, these natural pools are as much a testament to Pico’s unique geology.

Some of these natural pools also feature improved facilities to make swimming in them even more convenient and enjoyable.

That said, don’t forget to bring your swimsuit and get ready to immerse in the cool, clear waters of Pico’s natural pools.

It’s a simple yet incredibly gratifying way to experience the island’s charm. There are tons of them in Pico, but here are the top three spots I recommend visiting.

🏝 Poca das Mujas

For an unbeatable natural swimming experience, look no further than Poca das Mujas.

Nestled at the entrance to Lajes do Pico, this pool, formed by volcanic rocks, is considered the best in Pico.

With its striking backdrop, it’s not only perfect for a refreshing dip but also an excellent location for capturing memorable photos.

🏝 Furna de San Antonio

Furna de Santo António is a must-visit gem. Located on Pico Island’s northern coast, it boasts distinctive natural pools set amidst the open sea.

With a seafloor sculpted from basalt slabs, this spot gives visitors an authentic taste of Pico’s volcanic origins.

🏝 Sao Roque do Pico

Venture to São Roque do Pico for a truly oceanic experience. Its location, also on the northern coast, is replete with stunning natural pools.

Nestled among lava rocks, these pools shimmer with crystal clear waters, a testament to the unspoiled beauty of Pico Island. A visit here is an embrace of nature at its purest.

Also located in Sao Roque, right in front of a nice cafe, Aldea Açoriana, Poça da Branca is a spectacular series of natural pools with showers and bathroom facilities where you can enjoy some cool deeps in the ocean waters with spectacular views over Sao Jorge.

🏝 Zona Balnear do Calhau

I arrived in this deserted area when an elderly couple was about to swim in the freezing water.

I was in awe and they invited me to try as well. I politely told them that maybe next time.

I actually can’t wait to go back to try.

As you can see it’s very basic with no facilities but the water is crystal clear and calm and during the summer the nearby restaurant is open for refreshments.

9. Enjoy the View from Miradouro Mistério da Prainha

Situated on the main road that connects the center of the island to Sao Roque, this viewpoint boasts captivating vistas of the green slopes and the spectacular Pico coastline beside the nearby sister Island Sao Jorge (also a must-visit).

10. Relax at Lagoa do Capitão

For an idyllic retreat away from the bustling activity, escape to the tranquil embrace of Lagoa do Capitão.

It’s here where you can immerse yourself in the soothing sounds of nature, as the world outside falls away.

This quiet, unassuming pond, abundant with native flora and fauna, offers a serene spot for relaxation.

Providing picturesque views of Mount Pico and complemented by a scenic walking trail, it’s a perfect spot to pause, reflect, and simply appreciate the beauty around you.

With the majestic Pico Mountain serving as a grand backdrop to the serene lake, for suggestive photos. And let’s not forget the curious cows that frequent the area, adding a whimsical touch to your visit.

11. Go for a Picnic at Mistério da Prainha

Spanning over 700 hectares, Mistério da Prainha is a part of Sao Roque known for its rich vegetation and unique geological formations (which resulted from the longest volcanic eruption in the Azores). All of that makes it perfect for a picnic!

Parque Florestal da Prainha is a serene spot for a picnic here. Situated on Pico’s captivating north coast, this park provides the perfect backdrop for an idyllic picnic amidst verdant nature.

With the ocean as your view and the sound of waves as your soundtrack, it’s hard to imagine a better setting, and the park’s facilities make it even more convenient.

Be sure to visit the nearby traditional mill for a taste of local history. And don’t forget the hidden gem nearby: the lookout point called Miradouro Prainha.

Here, you’ll be treated to some of the most stunning views of the island, making it a must-visit while you’re in the area.

12. Take a Stroll at Lajes do Pico

As your adventure in Pico continues, set aside some time to leisurely stroll through the Lajes do Pico.

This quaint town offers a wonderful blend of rich history and charming scenery, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing walk.

The town offers historic convents and churches in its center, a scenic street along the sea, and several natural swimming pools and viewpoints that are definitely worth checking out.

Lajes it’s also one of the departing points of the whale-watching tours. So you can plan a visit after or before a tour and have a meal in one of the local restaurants.

I went to Comme si Comme sa and I had a delicious local meal.

13. Learn About the Whaling History of Pico Island

One of the lesser-known things to do on Pico Island is learning about its whaling history.

Though outlawed back in the ‘80s, learning about it is a fascinating journey through history and gaining a deeper understanding of Pico’s unique heritage.

I’m listing below a few places to find out more about its once-booming whaling industry.

👉🏽 Whalers Museum (Lajes do Pico)

Lajes do Pico has the oldest port of the Pico Island Azores and most of the town’s history is related to whaling (fortunately, now cetaceans are protected and loved here).

The Whalers Museum is a recent addition near the port that you can check out for a fascinating glimpse into the history of the whaling industry of this island.

👉🏽 Calheta de Nesquim

The civil parish of Calheta de Nesquim features elements from the times when whaling was a thing in Pico Azores.

You can go for a leisurely stroll around it and check them out, or you can even take tours here to learn the deets from knowledgeable guides.

👉🏽 Clube Naútico (Ribeiras)

Ribeiras was another hub for the whaling industry of Pico Island Azores back in the day. This is where the Clube Nautico still offers a place for old-timers to meet.

A visit to this club will give you the chance to meet someone and hear about whaling days from them.

14. Swim and Enjoy the View at Zona Balnear do Cachorro

You will find a different kind of adventure at Zona Balnear do Cachorro. It’s an oasis of natural beauty, tucked in Pico Island.

This natural swimming area is famous for its volcanic rock formations.

Discover nature’s artistry as the sea meets the craggy, black cliffs and creates a stunning contrast.

With steps leading into the ocean, the place ensures safety while retaining a wild, untouched aura. It’s an engaging blend of comfort and natural beauty.

Zona Balnear do Cachorro also offers breathtaking views. From here, you can see the imposing Pico Mountain, a sight to behold against the vast Atlantic Ocean.

And, as the sun begins to set, witness a color play that’ll mesmerize you. The sky turns into a canvas, with orange, pink, and purple hues blending perfectly.

In that area, you can also find a couple of interesting museums that you can visit, the Pico Wine Museum and the Volcano House.

I went to visit both museums and I loved the Volcanoes’ House especially as it offers a genuine experience that takes you on a journey to the Earth’s core. Here, they can explore the planet’s internal energy and unique sensations using a seismic simulator and an interactive dome.

The information is presented in different sections, allowing you to delve into topics ranging from the creation of the Universe to the small-scale features found in the landscapes of the Azores.

15. Grab Some Drinks and Food With a View

🍽 Cella Bar

Start your culinary journey at the Cella Bar. Perched by the beach, it offers an incredible setting for witnessing mesmerizing sunsets.

Its unique cocoon-like architecture makes for a standout feature, complementing the panoramic views you can enjoy from inside.

The terrace, an ideal hangout spot on calm days, offers an unparalleled vantage point of the surrounding beauty.

🍽 Magma Restaurant and Bar

My absolute favorite restaurant in Pico is the Magma Restaurant and Bar, which boasts an amazing view, striking architecture, and mouth-watering cuisine.

Its elevated setting gives you a taste of local dishes in a sublime ambiance.

The restaurant balances sophistication without being pretentious or ostentatious, offering a panoramic view of the Atlantic that’s possibly unmatched across Pico Azores restaurants.

Magma’s menu is a culinary delight, featuring a varied selection of local dishes and wines.

The ever-so-welcoming staff amplifies the dining experience, and on sunny days, the views become nothing short of incredible.

🍽 Ancoradouro

Finally, discover Ancoradouro, a waterfront dining experience that’s pretty and inviting.

This place is known for its delectable meat and fish dishes, served alongside an impressive selection of wines.

The location provides a scenic overlook of the water, making it a refreshing venue to enjoy your meal, especially when the sea is rough and waves are crashing over the front patio.

With a spacious, airy ambiance and open windows, Ancoradouro provides a different atmosphere from most restaurants.

Their seafood offerings, including fish skewers and soup, are worth a try.

Located in Sao Roque do Pico, Dasa Ancora is a small elegant restaurant with a minimal but delicious menu where you can choose between meat and fish and other local dishes.

It’s a great option if you are in the area. It’s only open for dinner from 7 pm.

16. Take a Scenic Road Trip on the Longitudinal Road (The Longest Straight Road in the Azores)

One of the reasons why I always suggest renting your own car in the Azores is that you can drive around at your own pace and explore the best parts of the islands.

In Pico Island, road EN3, also known as the Longitudinal Road, is the road that links Madalena to Sao Roque.

Not only is this the longest road in the Azores, but it’s also easily one of the most beautiful.

The open road, stretching as far as the eye can see, invites you to a realm where nature dominates the scene.

This straight highway is the perfect canvas to witness Pico’s geographical grandeur in all its untouched beauty.

You’ll see, on one side, the majestic Pico Mountain looming in the backdrop, while on the other side, the shimmering Atlantic meets the horizon. This scenic juxtaposition is a visual treat.

Stop for spontaneous picnics or photography breaks; the roadside teems with local flora, giving you ample opportunities to admire and capture the island’s botanical charm.

If you don’t want to rent a car, worry not, because on the Island tour that I have suggested above you will drive through this road and stop for some photos.

17. Visit the Furnas of San Antonio

Near Sao Roque do Pico, along the coastal road you will find a tiny island near the coast, covering about 0.16 hectares.

It’s made of basaltic rock and some soil, which has allowed natural plants to grow. It’s part of the Natura 2000 network, which means it’s recognized as an important place for certain birds, like the Sterna dougallii (garajau-rosado) and the Sterna hirundo (garajau-comum), which come there to nest in the summer.

Because of this, activities that might disturb the birds’ nesting process are not allowed.

Additionally, there are some interesting plant species there, such as the Festuca petraea (bracel-da-rocha) and the Spergularia Azorica. The area is also important for its pebble coast vegetation and the plants that grow on the slopes.

It’s definitely worth a stop.

For those desiring a more luxurious stay, the Adegas do Pico cottages offer a slice of paradise.

Located in the charming village of Praínha, these 12 traditional cottages are perfect for savoring panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.

⏰ How Long Does it Take to Drive Around Pico Azores?

Exploring Pico Island by car is a relatively swift affair, as you can drive around the entire island in roughly 4 hours.

However, this estimate is purely for driving time and doesn’t account for stops.

The beauty of Pico invites you to linger; it beckons you to pause at the picturesque vineyards, take a detour to visit an intriguing lava cave, or simply stop to admire a stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean or the towering Mount Pico.

When is the Best Time to Visit Pico Azores?

The best time to visit the Azores, including Pico Island, in my opinion, is usually the shoulder season, end of April to June and September to October when there are fewer crowds and prices are lower.

However, it’s difficult to join some activities because the water temperatures are still low and the sea can be rough.

The summer months, between the end of June through August are the best months in terms of warm weather and water temperature, though for this reason, it’s the most crowded.

This period is in fact considered the high season for tourism.

October to March are the rainiest months, and tourism activity dips as a result. Some hotels and attractions close during this period, and international flights become less frequent due to less demand.

So which of these is the best?

Choose the high season if you want the best weather, pleasantly warm with no rain; however, be aware that you’ll be dealing with a lot of crowds and the prices will be higher.

Choose the low season if you’re on a budget and don’t mind the rain and missing out on some activities. Those months are still great to enjoy Pico, but you’ll have to schedule your way around the rains.

How to get to Pico Island Azores

Getting to Pico Island is very easy in fact you can find both international and national flights flying into Pico Airport either from Lisbon or from Sao Miguel.

If you are visiting Sao Jorge or Faial you can get to Pico by ferry, although it’s usually the other way around.

How Many Days Should I Spend in Pico Azores?

Determining how long to stay in Pico Azores really depends on your travel goals.

If your aim is to get a good feel for the island, immerse yourself in its culture, explore its natural wonders, and relish its culinary delights, then a stay of a minimum of 3 days would be ideal.

During this time, you can venture into the lava caves, challenge yourself with a hike up Pico Mountain, enjoy a few relaxing hours by the beach, indulge in local cuisine, and still have time to admire the charming architecture and unique island culture.
