Do the vision kits sound better than the Exports ? I always thought the old Exports sounded better than the newer ones or is that just me ?

The older Exports aren't too bad, but the new Exports sound AWFUL. The visions sound pretty good. Much better than any Expoerts I've heard. But I'm not a Pearl guy, so I don't check their stuff out very often.

i have played the new exports a bit at the store...they did sound ok/good to me BUT they had black chrome heads on them. that might be the factor though. all i know is that whatever heads they do come with, the kit will DEF. sound better than the Groove Percussion kit i go rid of over 10 years ago.
the aqua glitter blue color the exports come in is pretty nice
those vision kits sound good also. all birch too

I tried it with the stock heads, and it was so bad.
There's actually an all maple Pearl Vision kit for sale on my local CL, with cymbals and hardware for $600. Not a bad deal, considering the shells are in good shape.

Older Pearl Export kits had mahogany and poplar shells, which were pretty good. I think that changed in the 90's though. My practice set is an Export bought new in the mid 80's and it is mahogany layered with poplar.

My school has a Maple Vision. Pretty good drums- great hardware, though I dislike the ISS mounts intensely. I haven't had much quality time with them (and the previous main user kept them tuned at ridiculously low notes) but they are just as good as any other kit in this price range.

For a jazz kit?
I was thinking about getting a knockoff RIMS mount but now I'm thinking it'd be much easier to use one of the snare stands laying around. They all have rubber Pearl "air suspension" tips, and if that still chokes the rack tom, I could just get some Lil' Booty Shakers for it.

Pearl Export and Vision are both good kits. My drum teacher has an Ian Paice setup on his Export and its really nice. I have a vision vbl (just arrived today) that I am bursting to rip open on my birthday. I have also tried the slightly cheaper vb's which are still really nice. Good kits and easy to expand on (which is my plan), really good mid - range and I recommend Pearl's mid range kits like these to anyone over any manufacturer's mid - ranges because of quality and price. I hear vml's are nice but I REALLY don't like maple drums..
